In memoriam Carl Laga (1924-2026)

It is our sad duty to announce the passing of Professor Carl Laga.

Born in Roeselare (Belgium) on October 29, 1924, Prof. Laga died in Leuven on June 28, 2026, at the age of 101.

With his passing, the field of Byzantine studies loses a scholar who, for decades, sustained and shaped the discipline at the University of Leuven. His work lives on in the texts he made accessible, in the researchers he inspired and mentored, and in the ongoing research in this field at Leuven.

His scholarly work is especially associated with the Series Graeca of the Corpus Christianorum, the renowned series he long directed as editor-in-chief and which he personally enriched through the publication of three highly significant volumes: Eustratius' Vita Eutychii patriarchae Constantinopolitani (CCSG, 25) and, together with Carlos Steel, the two volumes of the Quaestiones ad Thalassium by the seventh-century Byzantine theologian Maximus the Confessor (CCSG, 7 and CCSG, 22).

Carl Laga will be remembered as a cheerful and amiable man, as well as a scholar of remarkable versatility.
