On February 25th 2026 we have uploaded a new version of the data to the Open Access search platform of Clavis Clavium. This means that the data in the update platform and in the OA search platform are identical again. We are delighted that the changes to the data are again quite substantial.

Please note that in the database all contributors are mentioned by name and with the details of what they did under the tab “Revision history” that is provided with each entry. Please mention their names when referring to Clavis Clavium.

In this newsletter we present the following (click on the title of your choice to jump to the relevant section):

1 What's new in the OA search platform?

1.1 Latin

1.1.1 Clavis Patrum Latinorum (CPL) // Library of Latin Texts

We have continued the efforts to align Clavis Clavium with the updated Library of Latin Texts as launched in 2025. Parallel to this, we also continue the effort to split up “container numbers”, so that each of the underlying texts has its own entry. See e.g.

  • Gregorius Magnus, Registrum epistularum (CPL 1714, 1714a, 1714b, 1714c, 1714d): each of the more than 800 letters of Gregory’s Registrum epistularum now has its own entry, specifying editions, date and addressee.

  • Pelagius I papa, Epistulae xcvi (CPL 1698-1702): each of the 96 letters of this collection now has its own entry, identifying addressee, and mentioning incipit, edition(s), Jaffé 2016-number, date and content.

  • Ruricius episcopus Lemovicensis, Epistulae (CPL 985): the 18 letters of book 1 and the 65 letters of book 2 each has its own entry, identifying addressee, and mentioning incipit, edition(s) and the Italian translation with notes by M. Neri (Ruricio di Limoges. Lettere [Pubblicazioni della Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell’Università di Pavia, 122], Pisa, 2009)

In the near future we will do the same for authors like Ennodius of Ticino or Sidonius Apollinaris.

Worth mentioning is also the fully updated entry on Ps. Fulgentius, Homiliae LXXX (CPL 844) on the basis of P.-M. Bogaert – M. Pignot, L'ordre ancien des Octoginta Homiliae du Pseudo-Fulgence d'après les catalogues de Lorsch, in Revue bénédictine, 131 (2021), p. 17-49 et p. 344-386.

1.1.2 Clavis Patristica Pseudepigraphorum Medii Aevi (CPPM), vol. IIa, IIb & IIIa

Machielsen’s Clavis Patristica Pseudepigraphorum Medii Aevi, or CPPM in short (see https://www.corpuschristianorum.org/cppm), is an invaluable source of information for the study of “Patristic and medieval forgeries, attributed during the middle ages to a Latin father, who it not its (their) real author; important medieval alterations of genuine patristic writings; the numerous erroneous attributions (intended or not) of patristic and medieval Latin texts, to a Latin father who is not its (their) real author”, as worded by Machielsen himself.

Unfortunately, due to the way it is structured, the CPPM frequently has to repeat the same text in different parts of the book, i.e. under each author a particular text is attributed to. As a result, it is sometimes hard to gather all the information available about a certain text and to link it to information in other claves, especially the Clavis Patrum Latinorum.

After the full integration of volumes Ia and Ib into the Clavis Clavium, we are integrating the remaining volumes. However, rather than a systematic approach we have opted for a case by case approach. This means that when we have to work on a particular text and also a CPPM number is associated with it, the information of the CPPM is integrated at the same time.

In other words, if you open a work entry and the CPPM is mentioned as a mere reference work, that means the information has not yet been integrated into Clavis Clavium. If, however, the CPPM number is mentioned next to the title, where the other claves numbers are mentioned, then the information presented by the CPPM has been integrated.

3 Links to other databases

We are progressively adding more and more links to other databases:

Library of Latin Texts (LLT) — World’s leading database for Latin texts, offering texts from the beginnings of Latin literature down to the present day. The texts which are incorporated are selected from the best editions available and established according to best contemporary scholarly practice

Sources Chrétiennes Online (SCO) — A searchable database of the critical texts and French translations published in the printed “Sources Chrétiennes”.

Pinakes — recensement de tous les textes grecs, des origines à la fin du XVIe siècle, contenus dans les manuscrits décrits dans les catalogues imprimés de bibliothèques à l’exception des papyrus.

Agape — an open-access database which aims to map the reception of the Greek Church Fathers in print throughout early modern Europe.

Patristic Text Archive (PTA) — an Open Access text database offering a collection of texts and translations of Christian texts from antiquity.

4 How to contribute?

Clavis Clavium can only exist and thrive with the help and input from the scholarly community. Your contributions are therefore highly appreciated, not only by us, but by the scholarly community in general. There are different ways to contribute:

4.1 Regular contributions

If you are interested in becoming a regular contributor, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to explain you how everything works.

4.2 One-time contributions

Did you publish a peer-reviewed edition, translation or study of a text and do you have something to add to the existing entry in Clavis Clavium? Write down how you think the entry should look in a wordfile and email it to us. Please make it look like a ClaCla-entry with the information ordered in categories like Editiones, Traditio textus, Genuinitas,… We will review and enter the data for you and under your name and will send you a publish report so that you can claim your work.

4.3 Quick submit

Did you notice a small mistake or a hiatus in the data? Send us an email or go to “Quick submit” on the home page of Clavis Clavium. These notifications will get you gratitude, but no publish report.

All enquiries about Clavis Clavium can be directed to Dr Bram Roosen.
